Residential / Heating

Furnace installation sized for the 5F design temp.

ACCA Manual J load calculations, AHRI-matched system, permit pulled in your name. 80% AFUE standard or 90%+ AFUE high-efficiency condensing - the right furnace for your home, not the one with the highest installer margin. Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Daikin, Rheem and the Heil family.

AK Heating & Cooling installer commissioning a new residential gas furnace

Right-size matters more for a furnace than for an AC.

Northeast Ohio runs a 99% heating design temperature of about 5F. That's the outdoor temperature the furnace has to maintain indoor design temp against - and we punch below it several times every winter. An undersized furnace runs nonstop on a 0F night and still loses ground. An oversized furnace short-cycles, runs hot, wears out the heat exchanger early, and never settles into the long, steady cycle that's quiet and comfortable.

We run ACCA Manual J on every install. Square footage, ceiling heights, insulation R-values, window count and orientation, infiltration rate, the local 5F design temp - all of it feeds into a heat-loss calculation that produces the right BTU output. Manual S then picks the furnace that actually delivers that capacity from current manufacturer extended performance data, not from a marketing brochure. Manual D verifies your ductwork can move the air, and we tell you about duct sizing problems before the install instead of after.

The other big decision on a furnace install is venting. Standard 80% AFUE furnaces vent up the existing metal flue or chimney. High-efficiency 90%+ AFUE condensing furnaces vent PVC out a side wall and produce condensate that needs a drain. Re-venting a 1950s Warren ranch from a chimney to PVC isn't always cheap or trivial. We walk you through both paths in the written quote, with the gas-savings math on each, so you can decide instead of being told.

What an AKHC furnace install includes.

A full residential gas furnace install from us is more than a unit swap. The complete scope:

  • ACCA Manual J residential heat-loss calculation - written, with the inputs documented

How it works

How an AKHC visit works.

Six steps from the first call to a working furnace. No surprise charges, no change orders mid-install.

  1. 1

    In-home assessment

A real tech (not a salesperson on commission) walks the home, runs Manual J on the spot or back at the office, and gathers what we need: panel capacity, gas line sizing, flue and chimney condition, ductwork sizing, drain routing, thermostat location.

  2. 2

    Written quote with options

You get a written quote with three honest tiers - base 80% AFUE, mid 95% AFUE condensing, premium 97-98% AFUE modulating - matched to your Manual J load. AHRI match number listed for each. Warranty terms listed. 25C tax-credit eligibility flagged where applicable.

  3. 3

    Schedule + permit

We pull the mechanical permit in your name, lock the install date, and order the equipment. Common installs ship in 3-7 business days; modulating premium tiers 1-2 weeks.

  4. 4

    Install day

Two-tech crew typical, single-day install for most standard-efficiency replacements, 1.5 days for 80%-to-condensing conversions. Old furnace pulled, new furnace set, venting routed (or chimney liner verified for 80% AFUE), gas, electrical, and condensate connected.

  5. 5

    Startup + verification

We run the furnace through a full heating cycle, measure gas pressure at the manifold, run a combustion analysis (CO, O2, stack temp), verify airflow at the registers, and check the safety chain. Nothing leaves the install until it's right.

  6. 6

    Inspection + warranty

Local building inspector signs off. We register the manufacturer warranty within the eligibility window so you keep the full 10-year parts coverage. You get all docs by email.

Why pick AKHC

Why homeowners pick AKHC.

Plenty of NE Ohio shops can drop in a furnace. Here's what makes an install with us different.

Math, not eyeball

Manual J on every install. We will not size a furnace by matching what was there - that's how you get a furnace that short-cycles, wears out blowers, and dies in twelve years instead of twenty.

Honest 80% vs 90% guidance

Not every NE Ohio home is a slam-dunk for high-efficiency condensing. If your home is small, your chimney is in good shape, and re-venting is expensive, the gas savings on 95%+ AFUE may take 15+ years to recover the upcharge. We tell you. The right answer is the right answer - not the higher invoice.

Combustion analysis on every startup

Every furnace install ends with a combustion analysis - CO ppm, O2, stack temperature - logged with the install record. A furnace that runs isn't enough. It has to burn cleanly. That's how we hand off a furnace that's safe from day one.

AHRI-matched, warranty-valid

When the furnace is paired with an AC or heat pump indoor coil, every pair is AHRI-matched - required for warranty validity and rebate eligibility. We register the warranty on your behalf inside the manufacturer's window so you don't lose the full 10 years.

Permit-in-your-name

We pull the mechanical permit in your name and meet the inspector. Some shops skip permits to save fee dollars - that voids manufacturer warranties and creates problems at home-sale inspection. We never skip.

Tax credit + financing help

If your install qualifies for the 25C tax credit, we provide the AHRI match number, model numbers, and ENERGY STAR certification docs you'll need at filing time. Financing through Wells Fargo, Synchrony, or GreenSky is available for approved buyers.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

What does AFUE mean and what number should I look for?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the percentage of fuel that becomes usable heat - the rest goes up the flue. Standard 80% AFUE furnaces convert 80 cents of every gas dollar into heat. High-efficiency condensing furnaces hit 90-98% AFUE by extracting heat from the combustion gases before they exit. The federal minimum on new residential gas furnaces is 80% AFUE today; 95%+ is the common high-efficiency tier and is required for the 25C tax credit. Whether the bigger AFUE number is worth the upcharge depends on your gas bill, planned home tenure, and venting situation.

Should I get an 80% AFUE or a 90%+ condensing furnace?

Three considerations. (1) Operating cost - condensing saves 10-18% on annual gas usage compared to 80%. (2) Venting - condensing furnaces vent through PVC out a side wall, not up a metal flue, which means re-running venting and potentially abandoning the existing chimney. (3) Condensate drain - condensing furnaces produce slightly acidic water that needs to drain to a floor drain or condensate pump. If your home has existing PVC venting from a previous condensing install and a nearby drain, condensing is easy. If neither exists, 80% AFUE is sometimes the smarter spend. We walk you through the math in the written quote.

What's a Manual J load calculation and do I need one?

ACCA Manual J is the industry standard for calculating a home's heat-loss requirement. It uses your home's square footage, ceiling heights, insulation R-values, window count and orientation, infiltration rate, and our local 5F heating design temperature to produce the BTU/hour your furnace actually needs. Many shops skip it and "match what was there" - which is how NE Ohio ends up with oversized furnaces that short-cycle, run inefficiently, and wear out blowers early. We run Manual J on every install. Written. Documented inputs. The quote is built off the result.

What brands do you install?

Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Daikin, Rheem, Ruud, York, and the Heil family (Heil, Tempstar, Day & Night). Each has strong points. Carrier and Trane lead premium feature sets and 10-year extended warranties. Lennox runs the highest peak AFUE on a few models. Goodman/Amana/Daikin are excellent value-tier with 10-year parts. Rheem and York hold the middle. We service every brand listed; we recommend the brand and tier that fits your home and budget - not the brand we get the best installer kickback on.

Is the federal 25C tax credit still available?

The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit historically offered up to $600 for a high-efficiency gas furnace (AFUE 97%+, ENERGY STAR certified, northern climate region). Heat pumps qualify for a separate, larger credit - up to $2,000. Recent tax law changes affect availability and reporting requirements have shifted for 2026 installs versus prior years. Verify current eligibility with your tax preparer or at irs.gov before counting on a specific dollar amount. We provide the AHRI match number, model numbers, and ENERGY STAR certification docs you'll need at filing time.

Do you pull the permit and meet the inspector?

Yes - in your name, in your jurisdiction. Most NE Ohio municipalities require a mechanical permit on furnace replacements; some also require an electrical permit if the disconnect or wiring is touched. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on-site. The fee is rolled into your written quote so there are no surprises. Some shops skip permits to save fee dollars - that voids manufacturer warranties and creates problems at home-sale inspection. We never skip.

How long does a furnace install take?

Most straight furnace replacements are a single-day install - 6 to 10 hours from arrival to startup. Converting from 80% AFUE to a 90%+ condensing furnace adds venting and condensate drain work and usually runs 1.5 days. New construction or converting from an oil furnace or boiler can be 2-3 days. We give you a realistic window in the written quote before you sign.

What's the warranty on a new furnace install?

Most major manufacturers offer 10-year parts on residential furnaces when you register the install within 60-90 days of startup. Some brands extend the heat exchanger warranty to 20 years or limited lifetime on registered installs. Labor warranty terms vary by brand and tier. We register the warranty on your behalf within the eligibility window so you don't lose coverage. We also add a 1-year AKHC labor warranty on top.

Can I finance a new furnace?

Yes - we work with several HVAC financing providers (Wells Fargo Home Projects, Synchrony, GreenSky) and approved buyers can usually choose between 0% promotional terms over 12-24 months or longer fixed-rate plans. Application is short, decisions are usually same-day. Call (330) 469-6701 to talk through options before the install date so you know your terms going in.
