Listen to the start-up
Pay attention the first second your AC kicks on each spring. A hard click followed by a hum - instead of the smooth ramp-up - usually means the run capacitor is on its last legs. Fix it in May at standard rates and you avoid the after-hours premium in July when the same failure leaves you cooking at 87 degrees inside.
