Do I really need a whole-house surge protector if I already use power strips?
Power strips only protect what is plugged into them, and most cheap ones offer very little real protection. They also do nothing for hardwired equipment like your furnace, AC, well pump, or electric range. A whole-house device stops surges at the panel before they spread to every circuit. We recommend using both: the panel device for the big hits and quality point-of-use protectors for sensitive electronics. That gives you full, layered coverage.
What causes power surges in my home?
The dramatic ones come from lightning strikes near power lines, but those are not the most common. Most surges come from the utility grid switching loads and from large motors cycling on and off, including your own AC and refrigerator. These small surges happen many times a day and slowly wear down electronics. That is why protection at the panel matters even when there is no storm.
Will surge protection stop a direct lightning strike?
No device can fully stop a direct lightning strike, since that is an enormous amount of energy. What a quality whole-house protector does is absorb and divert the far more common surges, including the energy that travels in from a nearby strike. This is where most real damage comes from. It greatly lowers your risk for everyday surges and grid events, which is what threatens your equipment most of the time.
Does a surge protector need to be replaced over time?
Yes. A surge protective device absorbs energy every time it does its job, and eventually it wears out. Good ones have an indicator light that tells you when they are still protecting and when they need to be swapped. We show you that indicator during install so you can keep an eye on it. When the time comes, we can replace it quickly.
