AK Heating & Cooling technician diagnosing a residential air conditioner

Most AC failures come down to six things.

When a Northeast Ohio AC quits, the cause is almost always one of the same six: a failing run capacitor, a worn contactor, a refrigerant leak, a dead condenser fan motor, a clogged condensate line, or a thermostat that's lost its mind. Our trucks carry the parts for all six - so most calls in Warren, Youngstown, Niles, Boardman, Howland, and the rest of the Valley finish in one visit instead of three.

We diagnose before we quote. No flat-rate "the only fix is a new system" pitch on what's really a capacitor swap. If it's a cheap fix, we say so. If your unit is past its useful life - 12-15 years for a typical NE Ohio condenser, shorter near the salted streets in downtown Warren or the lake-effect corridor toward Ashtabula - you'll get an honest written replacement proposal with three options and zero pressure.

What an AC repair visit covers.

Every AKHC residential AC service call includes a full system diagnostic and a written, flat-rate quote before any work begins. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is rolled into the repair price.

  • Full system diagnostic - electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant
  • Refrigerant pressure and temperature-split testing
  • Run capacitor and start capacitor testing (microfarad reading)
  • Contactor and disconnect inspection
  • Outdoor condenser coil and fan motor check
  • Indoor evaporator coil and drain-pan inspection
  • Condensate line clear and float-switch test
  • Thermostat calibration and low-voltage circuit test
  • Common parts in stock on the truck (capacitors, contactors, fan motors, R-410A, R-32, R-454B, reclaimed R-22)
  • Written flat-rate quote before any work starts
  • 1-year parts and labor warranty on every repair
  • Optional pre-summer tune-up upgrade at a reduced rate
How it works

How an AKHC visit works.

Five steps from the call to a working AC. No call centers, no upsell scripts, no commission-tiered close.

  1. 1

    Call or book online

A real dispatcher answers (330) 469-6701 - 24/7, year-round. We get the symptoms on the phone and schedule a window that works for you. Online booking through HouseCall Pro is also available if you'd rather skip the call.

  2. 2

    Same-day visit

Most NE Ohio calls get a tech on-site within 4 hours during business hours. You get a text with the tech's photo and ETA when they're on the way. No four-hour windows where you sit at home all afternoon.

  3. 3

    Diagnose and price

Tech runs the full system diagnostic, identifies the root cause, and gives you a written, flat-rate quote on the spot. No work starts until you sign off in writing.

  4. 4

    Fix and verify

Repair happens that visit if parts are on the truck (most are). Tech tests the system under load, confirms refrigerant pressures and temperature split, and walks you through what they did before they leave.

  5. 5

    Warranty on file

Every repair carries a 1-year parts and labor warranty. You get an email confirmation with the service record so it's on file if anything acts up. Refrigerant additions are logged - federal recordkeeping requires it on larger systems.

Why pick AKHC

Why homeowners pick AKHC.

Plenty of NE Ohio HVAC shops can swap a capacitor. Here's what makes a service call from us different.

Same-day across five counties

Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage, Ashtabula, and Columbiana - we dispatch out of Warren and cover all five. No "we'll get to you Tuesday" when it's 88 degrees outside and the design load is at the wall.

Flat-rate pricing, no surprises

Written quote before any wrench turns. The price you sign off on is the price you pay - we don't bill hourly, and we don't bolt on "oh, we found another issue" mid-job invoice creep.

EPA Section 608 Universal certified

Every tech on the truck is Section 608 certified to handle every residential and commercial refrigerant legally - R-22, R-410A, R-32, R-454B, and the commercial blends. We log every refrigerant addition because federal recordkeeping requires it.

All major brands serviced

Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Daikin, Rheem, Ruud, York, Heil/Tempstar/Day & Night, and most import brands. Parts pipeline established for the common-failure components on each.

Family-owned, locally accountable

Mantalis family, Warren HQ, real techs you'll see again. If the repair doesn't hold, you call the same number and we make it right - no escalation to a regional manager you can't reach.

AK family cross-trade access

Need plumbing while we're there, or water mitigation if a condensate clog already flooded the basement? We loop in AK Water Works or RestoWorks (our sister companies). One phone number for HVAC, plumbing, and restoration across NE Ohio.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

How quickly can you get a tech to my house?

Most NE Ohio calls get a tech on-site within 4 hours during business hours. No-cool emergencies during summer heat waves jump the queue - call (330) 469-6701 and we'll triage on the phone. After-hours service runs 24/7 with a premium rate.

Do you charge a service call fee?

Yes - we charge a flat diagnostic fee that covers the truck roll and the full system check. Call (330) 469-6701 for the current rate. If you approve the repair the same visit, we roll the diagnostic into the flat-rate repair price so you don't pay twice.

What if my AC just needs more refrigerant?

Refrigerant doesn't get used up - it's a closed loop. If you're low, you have a leak somewhere. We'll find it, give you a written estimate to repair, then recharge. Topping off without fixing the leak is throwing money away (and on R-22 systems at $200+/lb, it's serious money).

What brands do you service?

Every major residential brand: Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Daikin, Rheem, Ruud, York, Heil, Tempstar, Day & Night, and most import brands. We service older R-22 systems too, though when the repair gets expensive on an aged system we'll tell you when replacement makes more sense.

Should I repair or replace my AC?

Rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than half a new system and the unit is over 10 years old, replacement usually wins. If the unit is under 8 years old, repair almost always wins. R-22 systems (pre-2010) face high refrigerant costs that often tip the math toward replacement. We give you both numbers in writing and let you decide - no commission pressure either way.

Can I get same-day service on a weekend or holiday?

Yes. We run 24/7 emergency dispatch year-round across all five service counties. After-hours rates run 1.5-2x standard but you get a real tech on the truck, not a callback for Monday morning.

What's an A2L refrigerant and does my system have one?

A2L is the safety classification for the newer refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B that started replacing R-410A in residential equipment manufactured in 2025 and later. "A2L" means low-toxicity and mildly flammable (much less flammable than propane). Systems installed before 2025 are almost certainly R-410A or R-22 - not A2L. Our trucks carry both A2L and legacy refrigerants and the A2L-rated service tools they require.

Clark's Tip · HVAC Maintenance

Hose down the condenser - gently

Once a month from June through September, take a garden hose to the outdoor condenser fins. Gentle spray, top down, no pressure washer - the fins bend. Cottonwood seed, grass clippings, and dust pack those fins solid and force the compressor to run hot. Five minutes of cleaning every month adds years to the unit. If you're near a salted road, even more important - road salt eats aluminum coils alive.
