24/7 - we mean it
Real dispatcher, real tech, real parts. Most after-hours calls in Warren, Youngstown, Boardman, and the Valley get a tech on-site inside 2 hours. Food loss is the cost of waiting - we don't make you wait.
When the cooler goes down, food spoils in hours. We answer 24/7, dispatch an EPA-certified tech with the parts on the truck, and get your walk-in back to temp - across Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage, Ashtabula, and Columbiana counties.

A walk-in cooler is a simple system that fails in predictable ways: dirty condenser coil, dead evaporator fan motor, defrost cycle stuck, refrigerant leak, door gasket gone soft, or compressor short-cycling. We carry the parts for all of these on every truck, which is why most NE Ohio service calls finish in one visit instead of three. Master-Bilt, Kolpak, Bally, Norlake, Polar King - we service every common box.
On the condensing side: Bohn/Heatcraft, Copeland (Emerson), Tecumseh racks all get the same EPA Section 608 certified treatment. Refrigerant leaks get located, repaired, and logged for federal recordkeeping. R-404A systems get retrofitted to R-448A or R-449A when it makes sense, recovered cleanly when it doesn't. Newer self-contained boxes running R-290 propane get the right service tools and the right disposition. The Valley Mechanical Solutions team brought decades of Mahoning Valley restaurant refrigeration experience to AKHC - same techs, same response, more capability behind them.
Every commercial refrigeration call includes a full diagnostic, a written quote before work begins, and EPA-compliant refrigerant handling on every visit.
Five steps from the call to a working walk-in. No call centers, no upsell scripts, no commission close.
Real dispatcher on (330) 469-6701, 24 hours a day. We get the symptoms on the phone - cooler temp climbing, frost on the coil, compressor short-cycling - and triage on the call.
Tech is dispatched with the common-failure parts on the truck (evaporator motors, defrost boards, contactors, capacitors, common refrigerants, gasket kits). Most calls don't need a return trip.
Tech runs full diagnostic, identifies the root cause (not just the symptom), and gives you a written flat-rate quote before any work begins.
Pump-down if required, repair, EPA-compliant recharge, system tested under load. Refrigerant additions are logged on the work order for federal recordkeeping.
You get the service record, refrigerant log, and 1-year parts/labor warranty in writing. On systems over 50 lb of refrigerant, the EPA recordkeeping packet is on file.
Plenty of NE Ohio shops claim commercial refrigeration. Here's what makes our trucks different.
Real dispatcher, real tech, real parts. Most after-hours calls in Warren, Youngstown, Boardman, and the Valley get a tech on-site inside 2 hours. Food loss is the cost of waiting - we don't make you wait.
The Valley Mechanical Solutions refrigeration crew is now AKHC's commercial refrigeration team. Decades of Mahoning Valley restaurant work, the same techs, the same trucks, with the AK back-office and 24/7 dispatch behind them.
Every tech is 608 Universal certified to handle every commercial refrigerant legally - R-404A, R-407A, R-448A, R-449A, R-407C, R-744 (CO2), R-290 (propane). We log every refrigerant addition because federal recordkeeping requires it on 50-lb+ systems.
Evaporator motors, defrost boards, contactors, capacitors, gasket kits, and common refrigerants ride on every commercial truck. One-visit repairs are the norm, not the exception.
Family-owned, local, accountable. When the work doesn't hold, you call the same number - no escalation to a regional manager you'll never reach.
Plumbing or restoration issue tied to the refrigeration failure (drain backup, condensate flood)? We loop in AK Water Works or RestoWorks (sister companies) and handle the whole problem on one invoice.
Call (330) 469-6701 - 24/7. While you wait, move the most temperature-sensitive product to a reach-in or backup walk-in if you have one. Document the cooler temp and the time it started climbing (insurance will ask). Don't open the door more than you have to. We answer the phone live, triage on the call, and dispatch a tech with the common-failure parts on the truck.
Usually it's the defrost timer or board, a stuck defrost termination switch, or a failed evaporator fan delay relay. On older mechanical timers the contacts pit and weld; on electronic boards the relays fail. We diagnose the board, the heaters, and the termination switch in one visit and most parts ride on the truck.
Three usual suspects: a failed defrost cycle (timer, heater, or termination), low refrigerant from a leak, or restricted airflow from a dirty coil or a dead evaporator fan motor. Iced coils kill capacity fast and burn out compressors slow. We pull the coil cover, find which one, and fix the root cause - not just chip the ice off.
Yes. Federal EPA Section 608 rules require service records (date, refrigerant type, amount added or recovered) on any appliance with 50 lb or more of refrigerant, retained for 3 years. Commercial refrigeration systems hit a 20% annual leak-rate trigger that mandates repair within 30 days. We log every refrigerant addition on every visit and provide your records package on request - it's not optional and we don't cut corners on it.
Indoor walk-in box assembly is typically 1-2 days once the panels are on-site. Add another day for the condensing unit, evaporator, line set, drain, and electrical. Outdoor walk-ins (Polar King and similar) often arrive pre-built and drop in same day on a prepared pad. Full timeline including permits and inspection runs 2-4 weeks in most NE Ohio jurisdictions.
Walk-in boxes can run 20-25 years if the panels are intact. The condensing unit is usually the limiting factor - 12-15 years typical. If the box is sound but the condenser is dying, retrofit the condensing unit and keep the box. If panels are delaminating, foam is wet, or the floor is shot, full replacement makes more sense. R-404A systems are also a tipping point - retrofit to R-448A/R-449A or replace, depending on condition. We give you both numbers in writing.
Boxes: Master-Bilt, Kolpak, Bally, Norlake, Polar King (outdoor), Imperial, Arctic Industries, and most regional manufacturers. Condensing units and compressor racks: Bohn/Heatcraft, Copeland (Emerson), Tecumseh, KeepRite, Larkin. Parts pipeline established for the common-failure components on each.
Same-day dispatch from our Warren shop across five counties.
“Furnace went out on a Sunday night. AK had a tech in the driveway in 90 minutes, parts on the truck, and we were warm before kids' bedtime. Worth every dollar of the maintenance plan.”
“Our restaurant walk-in went down at 6am. AK answered the after-hours line on the second ring and had us running before lunch service. We've switched all of our refrigeration work to them.”
“Had Generac install, AC tune-up, and a humidifier swap done across two visits. One bill, one company, real techs. This is what local service is supposed to feel like.”
Restaurant air is greasy. Add dust, lint, and the cottonwood seed that drifts through every Mahoning Valley alley in June, and a walk-in condenser coil packs solid in about a quarter. A packed coil forces the compressor to run hot and short-cycle, which kills it years early. Pull the cover, take a soft brush and a coil cleaner to the fins every 90 days, and rinse from the inside out. Five minutes saves you a $3,000 compressor.
