Salem is the commercial center of Columbiana County, and it has the oldest, densest housing in the roster. Quaker-founded in 1806, the core neighborhoods around the downtown and South Lincoln Avenue historic districts are full of 1890s–1940s homes — which means original gravity 'octopus' furnaces converted to forced air, undersized return ducting, and chimneys old enough to need a real look before they vent a modern 80%-AFUE furnace. Salem sits inside the natural-gas footprint, so we see more gas furnaces here than in the rural townships around it, but the older the house, the more retrofit work it takes to heat it evenly.
